Dear All (Neighbors, Friends & Family, especially those far away),

Below is the current CalFire Inciweb report on the Station (Angeles
Nat'l Forest) Fire:
http://www.inciweb.org/incident/1856/
The Station Fire has burned over 250 square miles (647.5 square
kilometers), making it the the 10th largest fire in California since
1933. Back fires (controlled burns) near Mount Wilson are complete,
so there is no longer any active fire close to our neighborhood, with
the possible exception of "hot spots" still smoldering in the burned
areas above us in Millard Canyon.

The following remarkable time-lapse video of the Station Fire flaring
up was taken on 29 August, from 7:00pm to 9:30pm. Watch the flames
appear at night and then spread rapidly. The images were taken from
Mulhulland Dr. just South of Universal Studios in the Hollywood Hills
(with a Canon EOS 20D, 17-35mm 2.8 lens...full wide, and in "P"
exposure mode). Even from that distance, the fire was immense.

The next time-lapse video was taken by an outdoor patio camera
compresses 24 hours into 6 minues (beginning August 28, 2009 at 6:16
pm and ending on August 29, 2009 at 6:06 pm). It really shows the
flare up and broad extension of the fire front, especially at night.
Gradually, the black smoke and flare ups move westward and eastward
out of the camera's view.

The Elk Mountain Hotshots fire crew posted several videos of the fire
to a You Tube site:

There is even footage of one helicopter making a night drop on the
fire. Usually, aircraft are grounded at night because it can be very
hazardous to attempt drops in the dark when smoke obscures the
terrain and power lines become almost invisible.

Children have written many heartfelt "thank you" letters to the
firemen. Below is an endearing example from the InciWeb site:

Dear Fire Fighter,
Hope your safe. Hope
you did not get heart.
Thank you for puting
out the fires. no
wonder your called
fire fighters because
you fight fires. Love
Jordan

We certainly agree with Jordan's comments.

Lori
