Dear Friends, Neighbors & Trail Users,
After all the destruction caused by recent wildfires in California
and the trend towards overdeveloping the remaining wild foothills,
the following proposal is an exciting concept for protecting a
significant region of old growth chaparral and wildlife habitat
within a new National Monument in California. The California grizzly
bear may be extinct; however, our state symbol has not been
forgotten. Old growth chaparral in the vicinity of Trabuco Canyon,
where allegedly the last known grizzly bear was shot and killed,
still exists and deserves recognition and protection.
Please lend your support to the proposed Grizzly Bear National
Monument... Even though there is some debate regarding whether the
last California grizzly bear was shot in Little Tujunga Canyon
(Angeles National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains) or in Trabuco Canyon
(Cleveland National Forest) to the South or in Tulare County (Sierra
foothills) to the North. Be that as it may, most of California's
grasslands, chaparral covered foothills and mountains were once
"grizzly country." Protecting what is left is important and of
special interest in the context of the California grizzly as an
ecologically and historically significant extinct species.
For those interested in more info. about the California grizzly bear,
the classic article, "California's Grizzly Bears" by Joseph Grinnell,
PhD,
reprinted from the Sierra Club Bulletin, 1938, may be of interest:

Fellow Chaparralian,
With the airing of Ken Burn's National Parks on PBS this past week
and the new push to create more National Parks by those who love
them, we have a wonderful opportunity to spread the word on a new
[proposed] park in Southern California - Grizzly Bear National Monument.
Please help us get the word out and distribute this flyer far and wide!
Grizzle on!
