HIKES of the Altadena Crest Trail Working Group (ACTWG),
a coalition of local groups and individuals
dedicated to preserving, protecting, and
enhancing trail resources in the Altadena foothills.
Members hike, explore and maintain portions of the Altadena Crest Trail
in the foothills of Altadena, and report news and discoveries in bi-monthly meetings.
Here, we hope to chronicle those hikes so that more members can join us in
restoring these cross-town routes.
News! Rubio Crest Trail - Rubio section of Altadena Crest Trail is Connected from Lake Ave to Stonehill, May 9, 2005. (Note: portions of this trail are only assessible with a guide). Read the Trail Chair's first end-to-end report on the newly cleared Rubio portion of the Altadena Crest Trail. Upper Arroyo to Meadows Exploration - From the entrance to the Upper Arroyo Seco, proceed north to the intersection of Lower Brown Mtn Road and El Prieto Trail. Leave the main road, and veer to the right past the private residence into a wide dirt trail that branches three times. Explore each of the three branches until you cant go any further. An easy paced round trip takes less than two hours. This hike is rich with monuments, bridges, streams and plenty of nice people. |
Rubio Creek Picnic Hike For a quick and easy trek to explore lower Rubio Creek, follow this
recently restored portion of the Altadena Crest Trail.
Enter the trailhead from Rubio Vista between two homes and go north on the Rubio Right-of-way trail.
After the first bend passing by a pipe across the gully, descend south down the slope to your
right when you see a trail going off into brush.
Take the meandering path downhill, through the brush, watching for an occasional red blaze and
orange flags.
Rounding a bend to the left, you will see and hear the creek as you hike down the side of the hill.
Pack a picnic and plan to soak your feet in the rushing waters of rocky-bottomed, Rubio Creek.
For jaunts down to this mostly shady lower canyon,
long pants are strongly suggested due to occasional, ground level, poison oak near the trail.
Larger stands of poison oak are obvious on the far side of the creek (on the east bank), once you
reach the bottom.
Return the way you came, carefully watching for orange flags hanging in trees to mark your way back up.
Don't miss that first turn up, to the right, or you will find yourself in a poison oak forest!
